Do you idolise your spiritual leader/Pastor?

Bible reading: 1 Corinthians 3:47 NLT “When one of you says, “I am a follower of Paul,” and another says, “I follow Apollos,” aren’t you acting just like people of the world? After all, who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only God’s servants through whom you believed the Good News. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow.”

In today’s technologically advanced world, we have unparalleled access to the teachings of spiritual leaders through various platforms, including social media. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has further accelerated the digitisation of church services, allowing more people to have access to sermons from the comfort of their homes. However, along with these advancements, social media has also granted us a glimpse into the personal lives of our pastors.
While this can be a positive example for some, excessive focus on a spiritual leader’s personal life can lead to idolisation, overshadowing our connection with God. It’s essential to recognise that the role of a good spiritual leader is not to make us dependent on them but rather to point us towards a dependency on God. Each person’s Christian journey and purpose are unique and will not mirror that of their pastor. Therefore, fixating on their lives can hinder us from discovering and fulfilling God’s plan for us.
While seeking spiritual guidance and encouragement from our pastors is beneficial, it should never replace our personal, intimate time with God. Dedicated time spent in prayer, studying the Bible, and engaging in worship should always be our ultimate priority. In this sacred space, we can fully connect with God and allow Him to empower us to fulfil His purpose for our lives. Furthermore, by developing a strong dependence on God and His Word, we are better equipped to discern and resist false teachings.
It’s important to remember that the same Holy Spirit residing in the hearts of the pastors we admire also dwells within us. This Spirit empowers and equips us just as it does for them. So rather than placing excessive importance on our spiritual leaders, I encourage you to focus on cultivating a deep, personal relationship with the Holy Spirit. Through this relationship, the Holy Spirit will lead, guide, and empower you to walk in alignment with God’s will.
