Why peace?

Bible passage: Philippians 4:6-7 “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

Many of us might have wished that the Bible passage in Philippians 4:6-7 read something like this: “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then God will grant all your requests.” Before grasping the importance of peace in my life, I often prayed when anxious, expecting God to answer my requests rather than seeking His promised peace. I mistakenly believed that my requests held more significance than finding peace. How wrong I was!

Contrary to what we may desire to believe, God is not a genie who grants every request but rather a discerning Father who answers according to His will. Therefore, it’s essential to understand that the answers to our prayers may not always be a “yes,” particularly if they don’t align with God’s good and perfect plan for our lives (see Jeremiah 29:11). However, what God does guarantee us is peace.

Why is peace so important? Peace is a state of mental calmness, tranquillity, and freedom from worry and anxiety. Another definition describes it as an unwavering psychological or spiritual state of calmness, even in the presence of stressors. Therefore, peace holds greater significance because while answered prayers provide temporary satisfaction, peace of mind keeps us free from anxiety and worry in the face of challenges and difficulties, which are inevitable in life.

When confronted with stress-inducing circumstances, the real issue is not the circumstances themselves but our reaction to them. In 2 Timothy 1:7, God informs us that He has not given us a spirit of fear and anxiety but rather a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. This means that when we worry, we rely on our abilities and flesh rather than trusting in the Holy Spirit we received when we surrendered our lives to Christ. The solution lies in prayer because it refocuses our minds on God, and as our trust shifts from ourselves back to God, He fills us with His peace.

Therefore, when you find yourself in a difficult season of life, I urge you to pray to God. Make your requests known to Him and express gratitude for all He has done in your life. By doing so, you will navigate life’s stresses with an unshakable peace that comes from being rooted in Him. Trust that He hears your prayers and works all things together for your good. Embrace His perfect peace that transcends all circumstances, and it will guard your heart and mind against fear and anxiety.
