I often find it difficult to approach God after I have sinned due to shame or guilt. In moments like these, it can be tempting to hide from God just like Adam and Eve did after they disobeyed Him in the garden of Eden (Genesis 3:8) or give up and continue to sin. However, you must remember that a sinful lifestyle is incompatible with the spirit of God (Holy Spirit), and without Him, it is impossible to resist sin. When David was convicted of his sin, he ran straight to God and not away from Him because he recognised that a life without Him was not an option. Sometimes I am so burdened by the guilt and disappointment of falling into sin that I struggle to find the words to pray. In moments like these, I am so grateful for this psalm because it serves as a perfect prayer of repentance, and I encourage you to check out the entire chapter when you are struggling with sin. For me, one of the most profound parts of this prayer is the recognition that the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives is essential and that sin has a detrimental effect on our relationship with the Holy Spirit. So I want to encourage you to emulate David’s example to eagerly approach God with sincerity and repentance when convicted of sin. And if you are struggling to find the words to say, you can’t go wrong by simply praying Psalm 51 with sincerity.
