Luke 18:11-14
11 The Pharisee took his stand ostentatiously and began to pray thus before and with himself: God, I thank You that I am not like the rest of men—extortioners (robbers), swindlers [unrighteous in heart and life], adulterers—or even like this tax collector here. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I gain. 13 But the tax collector, [merely] standing at a distance, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but kept striking his breast, saying, O God, be favorable (be gracious, be merciful) to me, the especially wicked sinner that I am! 14 I tell you, this man went down to his home justified (forgiven and made upright and in right standing with God), rather than the other man; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.
As christians striving to live a righteous life before God (as we should be), it can be easy to get so caught up in our righteous acts especially when others begin to notice, that we begin to elevate ourselves from those around us and even appear boastful and pompous in our approach towards God like the pharisee in the passage above.
Remember that even Jesus in all his righteousness and glory humbled himself before God (Philippians 2:5-11). When we approach God, we should keep it in mind that without His grace and mercy we wouldn’t be able to live the ‘righteous’ life we strive towards. We should also remember that the “good deeds” that we do are simply what is required of us as christians!!
Luke 17:10 ‘Even so on your part, when you have done everything that was assigned and commanded you, say, We are unworthy servants [possessing no merit, for we have not gone beyond our obligation]; we have [merely] done what was our duty to do.’
So let us be more aware of the way in which we approach God in prayer so that our prayers may be pleasing and acceptable unto Him.
